Go Ask Alice

This is a love note about a woman with a pry-bar of steel and a heart of gold.
We were down in New Orleans again last week, 43 of us, working on five different rebuilding projects. Though much of the city is restored, many of the poorer neighborhoods are still in shambles – the Ninth, the Seventh, parts of Gentilly. Many, many blocks have well-restored homes abutting still-empty, moldy, rotting wrecks. Tourists wandering the French Quarter or the riverfront can enjoy a city on the mend but tens of thousands of residents remain destitute, with little hope but lots of red tape, rip-offs, frustration, danger, and despair.
My crew returned to Reverend Josephine’s place on Columbus Street. Between last fall and April another group finished up the drywall and paint so the hall was pretty usable. Our job was to frame out a kitchen and bathrooms. The children who come there after [...]

talking of babies

my friend, karen’s baby girl anika, turned 1 year old last april 17. and we celebrated yesterday at jollibee pasig rotonda. as i was going there (it was a long ride since i came from las pinas at the time) i thought about how time flew for all of us…my friends (especially karen) and i.
i first met karen in 2005 in bicol, working for creative page online. we were both writers then. we easily clicked because we were both quite quirky and warped. we were also both happy with the loves of our lives. in 2006, on an outing, she told me that she want nothing more than to be married to her arman…and actually that wish came true later that year. they both came to manila where karen worked in a company in pasig. i missed a whole chunk of that story in her life because i was then [...]

Monster Jam in Fresno, CA

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 20-04-2008

The last time Monster Jam had a show in the Bay Area (Oakland Arena) it rained.  The boys and my hubby really wanted to watch these monster trucks for as long as I can remember. But the closest Arena is going to be in Fresno. Since hubby didn’t have to work on that Saturday, I planned on surprising them to see the show.
So I went online and purchased tickets (cost me $96.40), printed directions (2.5 hours drive one-way), prepared snacks (crackers and H20 bottles for each), packed our bags and hoping it wouldn’t rain last time. The kids kept asking where we’re going but I insisted on not telling them until we get there. So for the next two and a half hours, we were bombarded with the ever famous “are we there yet”.  We got there 2 hrs before the show and parking is already full. We got a spot and the [...]

6 Weeks - Special Weekend Ahead!

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 03-04-2008

Can you believe that Emma is already a month and a half old? Actually, to me, she seems older for some reason. She is just a sweet baby! I never knew I would feel so attached and love someone so much.
This weekend is going to be a busy one starting tomorrow. My best friend is getting married and I am so excited! She has found the most wonderful guy for her and they are just too cute! I don’t think either of them could have found anyone more perfect. It is so neat to see that! I couldn’t be happier for them.
So, tomorrow, Emma gets to stay with Mimi (Jeremy’s mom) during the day and then my mom in the evening. As excited as I am to have a girl’s day with the bride and other bridesmaids, I am kind of sad to not see my little Emma all day. [...]

the earth is the earth, no need to travel in the air

“Aquarians basically possess strong and attractive personalities. They fall into two principle types: one shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the other exuberant, lively and exhibitionist, sometimes hiding the considerable depths of their character under a cloak of frivolity. Both types are strong willed and forceful in their different ways and have strong convictions, though as they seek truth above all things, they are usually honest enough to change their opinions, however firmly held, if evidence comes to light which persuades them that they have been mistaken. They have a breadth of vision that brings diverse factors into a whole, and can see both sides of an argument without shilly-shallying as to which side to take. Consequently they are unprejudiced and tolerant of other points of view. This is because they can see the validity of the argument, even if they do not accept it themselves. They obey the Quaker exhortation [...]
